John Lighter Frost, a 38-year-old sheriff from Chambers County, Texas, met a tragic end on November 10, 1900. Sheriff Frost was attempting to serve sequestration papers on a prominent citizen who managed a hunting preserve called Lake Surprise. During this duty, he was shot and killed. His body was never positively identified, as a decomposed body believed to be his was found buried in the mud near where his hat was discovered.
