The situation escalated into a deadly gun battle, resulting in Shane being shot and killed. The suspected gunman, 37-year-old Gilbert Ortez Jr., a former reserve police officer, was found dead inside the mobile home after a nine-hour standoff with law enforcement. Authorities were uncertain whether Ortez died by suicide or was shot by police.
Shane's death was a significant loss to the community, and he is remembered for his dedication and service. He is survived by his wife, Trish Detwiler, and their three children: Audie Michael, Aiden Glynn, and Abigail Paige Detwiler. Shane's funeral was held with full law enforcement and military honors, and he was laid to rest at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown, Texas.
The tragic incident led to the arrest of Ortez's common-law wife, Pamela Leggett-Ortez, who was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Bomb squad officers also discovered potential explosive devices at the residence, adding to the complexity of the investigation.
