On the night of September 13, 1902, Deputy Sheriff Will R. Velvin, aged 38, was shot and killed in Greenville, Texas. Velvin, who had served with the Hunt County Sheriff's Office for ten years, was attempting to arrest a man wanted for violating local liquor laws. The suspect had been targeted with three warrants sworn out by Velvin just two days prior to the incident. Velvin was shot in J. L.
