Charles D. Maddux, a 30-year-old special policeman with the Corsicana Police Department in Texas, tragically lost his life on August 22, 1904. Maddux had only served with the department for five days before his untimely death. He was shot and killed by a man he had just arrested at the Union Depot. The suspect, wanted for rape and causing a disturbance, pulled out a pistol and opened fire on Maddux as he was walking him to jail.
Despite being mortally wounded, Maddux managed to return fire but did not hit the suspect. The man was arrested shortly after and charged with murder.
Initially, the suspect was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but the verdict was later reversed. He was convicted a second time and received a four-year prison sentence. The case drew significant attention in Corsicana, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers even in the early 20th century. Maddux was survived by his wife, and his sacrifice is remembered by the community and fellow officers.
