Night Watchman Henry Hampton Joslin, aged 53, was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 31, 1905, in Kyle, Texas. Joslin, a widower with six surviving children, was patrolling downtown near the train depot when he was shot by an unknown assailant. The incident occurred around 12:40 a.m., when Joslin heard someone approaching from behind. He turned around to confront the person, only to be shot in the breast with a .41 caliber pistol.
Despite being conscious and calling for help, Joslin succumbed to his injuries around 2:40 a.m.
The investigation into Joslin's murder revealed that he could not identify the shooter due to the darkness and claimed he had no known enemies. Unfortunately, no records indicate that anyone was ever arrested or that the case was solved. The lack of resolution left Joslin's family and the community without closure, and his burial details remain unknown, though it is believed he was buried in the San Marcos Cemetery in Hays County.
