Deputy Sheriff Amos R. Wofford, aged 35, was fatally shot on February 4, 1907, in Winnsboro, Texas. He and his brother, Constable John Wofford, were attempting to arrest a father and son for liquor violations at the intersection of Elm and Bowery Street . During the arrest attempt, one of the suspects produced a handgun and opened fire, fatally wounding both lawmen. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, both suspects were also shot and killed.
