On April 16, 1968, the Arellano family, including 2-year-old Leticia Arellano, were traveling from Mexico to San Angelo, Texas, to meet with family members. Their car broke down due to a flat tire on a desolate stretch of U.S. Route 277 between Loma Alta and Sonora, Texas. After fixing the flat tire, the family continued their journey but encountered another flat tire a few miles further along.
Tragically, this led to a series of events that resulted in the brutal murder of five members of the family, including Leticia Arellano, a 2-year-old Hispanic girl.
The victims were shot, stabbed, and beaten, with Rosa Arellano, a 21-year-old Hispanic woman, also being sexually assaulted. Leticia Arellano, the 2-year-old Hispanic girl, succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital two days later. The sole survivor of the incident was Manuel Arellano Jr., a 5-year-old Hispanic boy. The bodies of the victims were discovered near Highway U.S. 277 in rural Edwards County, south of Sonora, Texas.
The investigation into the Arellano family murders has spanned decades, with multiple leads being followed without success. The case remains one of the most heinous, unsolved mass murders in Texas. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, no arrests have been made, and the suspects remain unidentified. The Texas Rangers have continued to seek the public's help in solving this case, offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the crime.
In the days following the murders, a massive manhunt was organized, and witnesses reported seeing the family in the company of a large Anglo man dressed in elaborate cowboy clothes. This man was described as being a little more than 6 feet tall, weighing about 200 pounds, with sandy hair, light eyebrows, and pockmarks or a rash on his neck. Despite these descriptions and the efforts of law enforcement, the case remains unsolved, and the identity of the killer is still unknown.
The Arellano family murders have left a lasting impact on the community, with memorials being erected to honor the victims and keep their memory alive. The case continues to be a haunting reminder of the brutal violence that took the lives of five innocent family members, including 2-year-old Leticia Arellano.
