On October 26, 2008, police in St. Louis, Missouri, responded to a shooting in the 2900 block of Hebert Street, located in the northern part of the city. Upon arrival, authorities found a male victim, Cortez Johnson, who had been struck by gunfire while standing on a porch. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident was determined to be a drive-by shooting carried out in a neighborhood associated with the 'Sullivan Mob' or 'Beam Street' faction.
Detectives
investigated the homicide as a targeted act of retaliation. Evidence indicated that the suspects were seeking revenge for the 2004 death of an associate, Orlando Jones. Investigators identified two men involved in the attack: Steven Smith and Derrick Douglas. According to court documents, Douglas operated the getaway vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driving into the rival territory to facilitate the attack. Smith, identifying a target, fired the weapon from the passenger seat, striking and killing Johnson.
Derrick Douglas was subsequently arrested and charged for his role in the murder. Prosecutors argued that while he did not pull the trigger, his actions as the driver were essential to the commission of the crime. Douglas eventually admitted to his involvement and pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Steven Smith was identified by the state as the gunman who fired the fatal shot during the drive-by.
