Sergeant Ed Holcomb Jr., aged 31, of the Conroe Police Department in Texas, tragically lost his life on August 24, 1982. He was shot with a rifle while responding to a domestic dispute call at a mobile home. Sergeant Holcomb and three other officers had arrived at the scene and learned from the suspect's wife that the suspect was inside the home and possibly armed.
As Sergeant Holcomb approached the mobile home, the suspect opened fire, striking him under his right arm, a spot not protected by his bulletproof vest. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Sergeant Holcomb succumbed to his injuries three weeks later on September 14, 1982.
The suspect, who was the subject of the domestic dispute call, subsequently set his home on fire and took his own life. Sergeant Holcomb had served with the Conroe Police Department for five years and was survived by his wife and son. His death was a significant loss to the department and the community, and he was posthumously awarded the Conroe Police Department's highest honor, the Medal of Honor.
The incident did not lead to any arrests or ongoing litigation, as the suspect died by suicide immediately following the shooting. The case was treated as a line-of-duty death, and Sergeant Holcomb's sacrifice is remembered and honored by his fellow officers and the community.
Sergeant Holcomb's legacy continues to be honored through memorials and tributes, including a life-size bronze statue that stands as a reminder of his bravery and dedication to serving and protecting the community.
