Billy Gene Smelley, a 45-year-old male officer of the Quinlan Police Department in Texas, tragically died on September 18, 1983. Smelley succumbed to a gunshot wound he sustained ten days earlier when a prisoner managed to gain control of another officer's weapon inside the police station at 104 Main Street. The prisoner shot both officers during an escape attempt. Smelley was in the process of booking the suspect for driving while intoxicated when the incident occurred. Despite being transport ...
