Billy Gene Smelley, a 45-year-old male officer of the Quinlan Police Department in Texas, tragically died on September 18, 1983. Smelley succumbed to a gunshot wound he sustained ten days earlier when a prisoner managed to gain control of another officer's weapon inside the police station at 104 Main Street.
