On June 30, 2007, Deputy Sheriff Michael Page, aged 34, of the Bowie County Sheriff's Office in Texas, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Deputy Page was shot and killed with his own service weapon during a struggle with a hit-and-run suspect. The incident occurred when Deputy Page responded to a report of a car striking a utility pole. Upon arriving at the scene, he observed a man running into the nearby woods. A scuffle ensued, during which Deputy Page was struck over the head and then shot in the shoulder with his own weapon. Despite being transported to a local hospital, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after.
The suspect, identified as Henry Wakefield, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Wakefield had fled the scene of the accident in a possibly stolen vehicle and engaged in a physical altercation earlier that night. The circumstances surrounding the incident raised questions about Wakefield's motives, but ultimately, the only person who knew his reasons was himself.
Deputy Page, a U.S. Army veteran, had served with the Bowie County Sheriff's Department for three years and had previously served with the Texarkana Police Department for five years. He is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and three sisters. His death marked the first time a Bowie County officer had been killed in the line of duty since the 1960s.
