Michael Jay "Mike" Allred, a 41-year-old bartender from Marble Falls, Texas, was tragically shot and killed on August 24, 2007, at O'Neill's Sports Tavern. Allred, who was known for his generosity and dedication to his family and friends, was the first victim in a series of murders committed by handyman Paul Devoe. Devoe, who had a history of alcohol and drug abuse, allegedly shot Allred in the chest when Allred tried to intervene during an altercation.
Following the murder of Allred, Devoe continued his violent spree by driving to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Paula Griffith, in Jonestown, Texas. After committing these murders, Devoe fled Texas and headed towards Shirley, New York. However, he encountered car trouble near State Line, Pennsylvania, where he shot and killed 81-year-old widow Betty Jane Dehart and stole her vehicle.
Devoe was eventually arrested on August 27, 2007, in Shirley, New York. He faced capital murder charges for the deaths of the two teenage girls, Haylie Faulkner and Danielle Hensley, in a trial that began in September 2009. Prosecutors sought the death penalty against Devoe due to the nature of the crimes and his extensive criminal history. The trial included testimonies from several witnesses, including friends and acquaintances of Devoe, who provided details about his actions and state of mind during the killings.
