On October 3, 2010, in Corpus Christi, Texas, 14-year-old Armando "Mando" Cantu IV, a Hispanic male, was tragically shot in the head by his mother's common-law husband, 34-year-old Ruben Arroyo. This incident occurred after an argument between Arroyo and Armando's mother, 31-year-old Crystal Cantu, also a Hispanic female, which led her to leave their shared residence with her five children and seek refuge at her mother's house on Bolivar Street.
Arroyo attempted to contact Crystal multiple times on the morning of the incident, but she did not respond to his calls. Later that afternoon, after Crystal's two youngest children had left with their grandmother, Arroyo entered the Bolivar Street home and fatally shot both Crystal and her son Armando in the kitchen. Two other children present in the house managed to escape; one of them, a 13-year-old boy, sustained injuries while breaking a window to flee. Following the shootings, Arroyo turned the gun on himself and was later pronounced dead at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial. Armando was placed on life support but was taken off late Sunday, succumbing to his injuries.
Court records revealed that in 2005, Crystal had sought a protective order against Arroyo due to his violent behavior, which included physical abuse and threats to kill her and her family. Despite obtaining a temporary protective order, it was never finalized because Arroyo couldn't be located for service of the legal papers. Over time, the two reconciled and had another child together. Arroyo had a criminal history that included a felony conviction for possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor convictions for theft and assault causing bodily injury to a family member.
Armando was remembered as a respectful and excellent student who had made many friends at the Student Learning Guidance Center, where he was enrolled at the beginning of the school year. His untimely death deeply affected the school community, leading to counseling sessions and the creation of bereavement cards by his peers. In the aftermath of this tragedy, the community mourned the loss of both Armando and his mother, Crystal, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic violence.
