On December 25, 2011, Zohreh Rahmaty, a 58-year-old woman of Iranian descent, tragically lost her life in a horrific incident at the Lincoln Vineyards apartment complex in Grapevine, Texas. The incident, which also claimed the lives of six other family members, was perpetrated by Azizolah Yazdanpanah, Rahmaty's estranged brother-in-law. Yazdanpanah, dressed as Santa Claus, entered the apartment and opened fire on his estranged wife, Fatemeh Rahmaty, and their extended family before taking his
own life.
The victims included Fatemeh Rahmaty , their 14-year-old son, Ali, their 19-year-old daughter, Nona, Rahmaty's sister, Zohreh Rahmaty , her husband, Mohamad Hossein Zarei , and their 22-year-old daughter, Sahra. The scene was discovered by police after a 911 call was made from the apartment, which ended abruptly with the sound of heavy breathing and a faint cry for help.
Authorities determined that Yazdanpanah had brought two handguns into the apartment, indicating premeditation. The tragic event unfolded quickly, catching the victims off guard as they had just finished celebrating Christmas and exchanging gifts. The investigation revealed that Yazdanpanah had been experiencing financial troubles and had filed for bankruptcy, which may have contributed to his actions.
No arrests or further litigations were pursued as Yazdanpanah died by suicide at the scene. The case remains a somber reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of mental health awareness.
