Rudy Borrego, a 51-year-old motorcyclist from San Antonio, Texas, tragically lost his life on February 24, 2018. Borrego was killed in a traffic accident when a truck driven by Ricky Cantu, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time, turned left in front of him. The accident occurred in the 100 block of South Laredo Street, just blocks from Borrego's home.
Cantu, who had a blood-alcohol content of .21, nearly three times the legal limit, was charged with murder, intoxication manslaughter,
and manslaughter. His charges were upgraded due to two prior convictions for driving while intoxicated. In October 2019, Cantu was found guilty of felony murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison. The jury's decision brought a sense of justice to Borrego's family, who had been deeply affected by the tragedy.
Borrego's widow, Grace Martinez-Borrego, and their three children faced significant emotional and financial challenges following his death. The family had to use their savings for Borrego's funeral and were forced to deal with eviction and repossession of their car. Despite these hardships, Borrego's daughter, Kaitlyn, continued her education in honor of her father.
The case against Cantu highlighted the dangers of drunk driving and the severe consequences it can have on innocent lives. The verdict sent a strong message to the community that intoxicated driving would not be tolerated. Borrego's family continues to remember him as a loving father and husband who enjoyed riding his motorcycle.
