On the evening of December 1, 2009, Nelson E. Hopkins Jr., a 17-year-old Black male from Kansas City, Missouri, was making his way home after spending time at the Plaza Library. A diligent student with aspirations for higher education, he carried a completed college application in his pocket as he traveled. Investigators established that he had taken a bus to the intersection of 54th Street and Troost Avenue before continuing his journey on foot.
As he walked near the corner of 54th Street and Lydia Avenue, just a short distance from the Rockhurst University campus, he was confronted by an unknown assailant or assailants. During the encounter, which police determined was a robbery, he was shot. Campus security officers patrolling the area discovered him unresponsive near the university grounds. despite the arrival of law enforcement and emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene before medical assistance could be administered.
Detectives from the Kansas City Police Department launched an investigation, canvassing the area for potential witnesses who might have seen him on the bus or walking in the neighborhood that night. Authorities appealed to the public for information through the TIPS Hotline, hoping to identify those responsible for the violence. Despite these efforts, the case faced significant challenges, including a lack of cooperative witnesses. By late 2010, the homicide remained unsolved, leaving his family and the community without answers or justice for the loss of a young man who was on the verge of graduating high school. No suspects were taken into custody in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
