Johnny Ray McHenry, a 36-year-old man from Coldspring, Texas, tragically lost his life on July 7, 2014. He was found dead at a mobile home on Lynn Street in Coldspring, alongside Rodney Leon Youngblood, 56, also from Coldspring. The incident was a double-fatality shooting.
Three men were charged with the shooting deaths: James Douglas McCray, 20; Robert Lewis Hawkins, Jr., 28; and Quienten Marquise White, 21, all from Houston. Each of them faced two counts of capital murder, with bond set at $1 million per charge, totaling $2 million per defendant. The suspects were arrested shortly after the incident, with two of them found hiding in a tree during the search.
The investigation revealed that the three defendants had traveled to Coldspring with the intent to rob the occupants of the home. They brought guns along, anticipating resistance. Evidence suggested that McCray was the trigger man, while Hawkins and White were involved in the robbery. McCray later pleaded guilty to murder and received a 50-year sentence, while Hawkins was sentenced to 45 years for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. White remained awaiting trial.
The swift apprehension of the suspects was attributed to the efforts of San Jacinto County law enforcement, who received assistance from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice during the search. The case highlighted the dangers of home invasions and the severe consequences of such violent acts.
Johnny McHenry was remembered as a loving father, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a passion for teaching sports to his children and nieces and nephews, and his athletic talent was well-recognized. His death left a significant void in the lives of his family and friends.
