Drake Joseph Lund, a 19-year-old male from Bulverde, Texas, tragically passed away on July 12, 2014. He was born on September 19, 1994, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Drake was known for his charismatic personality and gentle soul, always ready with a big bear hug for anyone who needed it. He was passionate about music, ice hockey, skateboarding, and BMXing, but his true love was his family and friends.
On the day of his death, Drake and two other young men from San Antonio went to the
home of Rylee Carl Eklund, 19, of Bulverde, after receiving an incoherent phone call from him. When they arrived, Eklund called 911 to report that there were strangers on his property. Shortly after hanging up, Eklund called 911 again to report that he had shot his friend, Drake. When deputies arrived, they found Drake dead and two other young men, Sawyer Hiram Darwin and Robert Michael Bree, injured.
Rylee Carl Eklund was arrested at the scene for possession of marijuana and later charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault. He surrendered to authorities and was held under $100,000 bail. The investigation revealed that Eklund should have known that the supposed intruders were his friends, but he didn't take the time to look out the window.
The tragic incident left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a young man who had touched countless lives with his kindness and passion. The case brought attention to the importance of communication and understanding in preventing such senseless tragedies.
