Takita Kyshawn Mathieu, a 26-year-old African American woman, was tragically killed on February 18, 2015, in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred at her workplace, The Greenbriar Apartments, located near the Texas Medical Center. According to reports, Takita had ended her relationship with her ex-boyfriend four months prior to the incident. On the day of her death, she had called authorities to report that her ex-boyfriend had been harassing her.
Despite her efforts to seek help, the situation escalated into a fatal encounter.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the ex-boyfriend entered the office with a pistol, and after a heated argument, gunshots were heard. Takita was found dead at the scene, having been shot by her ex-boyfriend, who then turned the gun on himself in an attempted murder-suicide. The ex-boyfriend was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition. The police found a semi-automatic pistol at the scene, which was believed to be the murder weapon.
The investigation revealed that Takita had been subjected to continuous harassment by her ex-boyfriend, who had called her 140 times before the fatal shooting. Takita had filed multiple complaints against him due to his erratic behavior and constant telephone harassment. Despite these reports, the harassment continued, ultimately leading to the tragic event. The ex-boyfriend's identity was not disclosed by the police, as he was still alive and on life support at the hospital.
Takita's death highlighted the severe consequences of domestic violence and the importance of taking harassment reports seriously. Her family and friends were left devastated by the loss, and her young daughter was left to grow up without her mother. The case underscored the need for better protective measures for individuals facing similar threats and the importance of timely intervention by authorities to prevent such tragedies.
