Samira Siwakoti, a 31-year-old woman of Nepalese ethnicity, was tragically shot and killed on June 10, 2015, while working at the convenience store she owned with her husband in The Colony, Texas. The incident occurred during an armed robbery, where the suspect, Deon Kingston Jr., a 19-year-old male, entered the store, stole money from the register, and then shot Samira Siwakoti in the face, resulting in her immediate death.
Following the murder, Deon Kingston Jr. was arrested and charged with capital murder. An anonymous tip led police to Kingston's location, and he was apprehended shortly after fleeing the scene. Kingston was also linked to other armed robberies in the area, including one at a Cash-N-Go store in The Colony just days before Samira's murder. The investigation revealed that Kingston may have had accomplices, and authorities expected additional arrests related to the crime.
The case went to trial, but a mistrial was declared in August 2016 due to the jury's inability to reach a unanimous verdict. The mistrial was further complicated by the death of Samira Siwakoti's husband, Nabaraj Siwakoti, who passed away from natural causes during the trial. The family has continued to seek justice for Samira, with the retrial of Deon Kingston Jr. scheduled for the following year.
The Siwakoti family has faced immense hardship following the loss of Samira and Nabaraj, with their two young daughters now being cared for by relatives.
