DonVeion Williams, a 24-year-old Black man from the St. Louis area, was driving late one August night in 2011 when gunfire suddenly found him on West Florissant at North Kingshighway. He was behind the wheel of a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, heading westbound, when someone outside the car opened fire.
With multiple shots hitting him, the Monte Carlo kept moving, rolling into the intersection and colliding with two other vehicles that were stopped at the red light.
The scene would have looked like an ordinary traffic backup for a split second—until it became clear this wasn’t a crash that started with a mistake, but a shooting that ended in wreckage. Police were dispatched to the intersection around 11:00 p.m. after the report of the shooting.
Williams was rushed for medical help, but he did not survive. He died from his wounds at an area hospital, leaving investigators with a violent, fast-moving attack and a shooter—or shooters—described only as unknown.
As the case remained open, CrimeStoppers circulated the homicide as an unsolved investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward anonymously. The bulletin emphasized that tips could lead to a felony arrest of the person or people responsible, and it advertised a reward of up to $5,000 for information that breaks the case open.
