Shelby Trotnic, a 22-year-old woman from Conroe, Texas, was tragically found dead in her home on March 7, 2017. She was discovered in her master bedroom by a neighbor who had become concerned after noticing unusual behavior. Trotnic had been killed by a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators did not recover a weapon at the scene but identified a person of interest driving a maroon Dodge Ram pickup truck.
The investigation revealed that Trotnic had sent a distressing text message to her neighbor on the night of her murder, saying "gun to my head". This message prompted the neighbor to check on her the next morning, leading to the grim discovery. The neighbor found Trotnic lying in a pool of blood with stab wounds on her face and a blue plastic bag stuffed down her throat.
Christopher Stogsdill, 26, who identified as a woman named Chrissy, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Trotnic's death. Stogsdill and Sierra Diaz, 20, had fled to Colorado after the murder, but Diaz was arrested on a state-jail felony child endangerment charge. Stogsdill fought extradition but was eventually returned to Texas to face charges. Stogsdill pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
The case highlighted the brutality of the crime and the challenges faced by law enforcement in tracking down suspects who flee across state lines. The community was left reeling from the loss of a young woman whose life was cut short in such a violent manner.
