On March 25, 2017, Juan Gerardo Casares, a 23-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity from Progreso, Texas, was tragically killed in a shooting incident on the 600 block of Martinez Street. The incident occurred around 3:54 a.m. when the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired and a man down. Upon arrival, deputies found Casares lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Casares was one of two men who died as a result of the shooting. The other victim, 49-year-old Jose De Jesus Cano, also succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. A third victim, 28-year-old Nelson Salazar, was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.
Following the incident, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office arrested four suspects in connection with the double homicide. The suspects, Eduardo Alejandro Cano , Fernando Juan Casares , Eduardo Casares , and Jordan Jovvany Garces , were all from Progreso and were charged with murder. The arrests were made based on evidence gathered at the scene and witness testimonies.
The investigation indicated that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud between two groups. The suspects arrived at the residence in a white passenger car and engaged in a physical altercation with the victims, which escalated to the use of firearms. A total of 21 shots were fired during the incident.
The case remains under investigation, and the suspects were arraigned and held in custody with bonds set at $500,000 each. The motive behind the shooting and the details of the feud have not been fully disclosed by the authorities.
