Taylor Devon Garcia, a 22-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on August 28, 2018, in Quanah, Texas. The incident occurred at the Star Street Apartments, located a few blocks away from an elementary school. Initially, there were reports of a school shooting due to the proximity of the school campus, but it was later confirmed that the shooting took place at the apartment complex.
Witnesses reported seeing a man shoot several times at another man before fleeing the scene in a gray SUV. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
The suspect in the case, Edward Demond Reese, a 34-year-old African American male from Quanah, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Reese reportedly gave a full confession to the investigating Texas Rangers. He was charged with murder and held in the Hardeman County Jail on a $200,000 bail. The Texas Rangers led the investigation into the case.
During the trial, it was revealed that Reese and Garcia had a physical confrontation at the same apartment complex on July 7, 2018. On the day of the crime, Garcia approached Reese, who was standing outside an apartment with two friends. Garcia attempted to shake hands with one of the visitors when he and Reese exchanged words. According to witnesses, Reese pulled a gun and began shooting Garcia without any provocation. Reese claimed that he acted in self-defense, stating that he was wary of Garcia from their previous confrontation and that Garcia came at him aggressively while reaching for his waistband. However, the evidence at the scene contradicted Reese's account. The medical examiner determined that all three gunshot wounds to Garcia entered through his back, indicating that he was turned away from Reese at the time of the shooting. Additionally, no weapon was found on Garcia at the scene.
Reese was convicted of murdering Taylor Devon Garcia and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He was also convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm, for which he received a 10-year sentence to be served concurrently with the murder sentence. Reese had previous felony convictions for injury to an elderly person, cruelty to animals, and possession of a controlled substance, as well as numerous misdemeanor convictions. He will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least 30 years of his sentence.
