Donnie Combs, a male of unspecified ethnicity, was tragically killed on September 25, 2018, in Linden, Texas. He was 31 years old at the time of his death. The investigation into his death revealed a disturbing and violent crime scene. Combs and Cynthia Arnold were last seen together on the day of their deaths. They were reportedly using methamphetamine with Kevin Dewayne Shepard Jr., who later confessed to the murders.
Shepard, who was 31 years old, shot Combs and Arnold after an
altercation. According to an eyewitness, Shepard shot Arnold in the head while she was resting in her truck, and then turned to Combs, saying, "I've got something for you too," before shooting him as well. Combs attempted to flee but was chased and shot again by Shepard. Shepard then burned the bodies in a large fire pit along with tires and trash to cover up the crime.
The case went cold until July 2019 when an eyewitness came forward with crucial information. Investigators from the Texas Rangers and the FBI were brought in to sift through the burn pit, where they found burned bone fragments, bullet casings, and an earring identified by a family member as belonging to Arnold. Shepard was eventually convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life without parole.
The investigation and subsequent trial highlighted the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Cass County Sheriff's Office, Marion County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers, FBI, and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Shepard is currently serving his sentence at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Coffield Unit in Tennessee Colony, Texas.
