On May 20, 2012, Stephen Martin, a 30-year-old resident of San Francisco, was assaulted during an altercation in Sharon Meadows, Golden Gate Park, after the Bay to Breakers race. Martin, who had attended the event dressed in a troll costume along with a group of friends, got into a confrontation with another group of about 12 individuals. This other group included men wearing white and red 49ers jerseys and women in purple clothing, with one of them in an orange tutu.
The incident escalated when a man from the other group approached Martin and punched him, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement. Martin lost consciousness immediately and never recovered. He was rushed to the hospital and remained in a coma until June 8, 2012, when he passed away after his family decided to take him off life support.
The San Francisco Police Department released photos of two individuals believed to be involved in the attack, urging the public to help identify them. Witnesses described the suspect as a Latino male in his 20s, wearing a white 49ers jersey. Authorities believe the incident began as an argument, reportedly over a cellphone, and are still seeking anyone who might have witnessed the altercation or have additional information.
