On June 18, 2017, at approximately 2 a.m., 31-year-old Oakland resident and Skyline High School physical education teacher, Carlo G. Tateo, was fatally shot near the intersection of 11th and Folsom Streets in San Francisco's South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood. Tateo and his friends were leaving a nightclub when two men began harassing women in their group. When Tateo intervened, requesting the men to cease their behavior, one of the suspects produced a firearm and shot him without provocation.
Tateo was transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the incident, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) released surveillance footage depicting three individuals—two men and one woman—considered persons of interest in the case. The video shows the trio walking along Folsom Street shortly before the shooting. Despite these leads and public appeals from Tateo's family and law enforcement, the suspects remained unidentified, and no arrests were made.
Tateo's death deeply affected the Oakland community, particularly at Skyline High School, where he was a beloved teacher and football coach.
