Susana Neufeld, a 40-year-old woman from Seminole, Texas, was found dead on February 23, 2019. The Gaines County Sheriff's Office received a call at approximately 8:00 PM reporting a woman being shot in the 400 block of County Road 300-J in Gaines County. Upon arrival, deputies, along with officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol and the Seminole Police Department, discovered Susana Neufeld deceased from a gunshot wound.
Susana Neufeld was a Caucasian woman, born on November 7, 1978, in Andrews, Texas. She was a beloved member of her community and family, survived by her husband, Jake Neufeld, and their seven children.
Following the discovery of Susana Neufeld's body, a male subject was detained for questioning. The investigation led to the arrest of Jacob Unger Neufeld, a 41-year-old Caucasian male, who was identified as the suspect. An arrest warrant for murder was obtained through Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Jeff James. Jacob Neufeld was subsequently held in the Gaines County Jail on a one million dollar bond. The Gaines County Sheriff's Office was assisted in the investigation by the Texas Rangers.
The case proceeded to trial, where Jacob Unger Neufeld was charged with first-degree murder. The State alleged that Jacob Neufeld intentionally or knowingly caused the death of his wife, Susana Neufeld, by shooting her with a firearm. During the trial, Susana's family members provided testimony about the violent nature of her relationship with Jacob. They described instances where Jacob became angry when drinking alcohol and had threatened Susana multiple times with a firearm. Susana's father, John Peters, testified that Susana and Jacob had been married for almost twenty years at the time of her death. The couple had seven children together, ranging in age from six to twenty-three at the time of the trial.
The jury convicted Jacob Unger Neufeld of first-degree murder and assessed his punishment at life imprisonment in the Institutional Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, along with a fine of $10,000. Jacob Neufeld appealed the conviction, challenging the sufficiency of the evidence to support his conviction. He requested that the court reverse his conviction for first-degree murder and instead convict him of the lesser-included offense of manslaughter. However, the Court of Appeals of Texas, Eleventh District, affirmed the conviction, upholding the jury's verdict and the sentence imposed by the trial court.
The tragic death of Susana Neufeld and the subsequent legal proceedings highlight the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of addressing such issues within the community. Susana's family and friends continue to mourn her loss and remember her as a loving and cherished individual who was taken from them far too soon.
