Zuhyr Hamza Kaleem, a 21-year-old male of Pakistani ethnicity, tragically lost his life on April 26, 2019, in Plantersville, Texas. Kaleem, a student at Lone Star College with aspirations of attending the University of Houston, was last seen alive near Greenhouse Road and FM 529. His disappearance puzzled his family, who reported him missing a couple of days later.
The investigation into Kaleem's death revealed a disturbing sequence of events rooted in a dispute over marijuana and a small sum of money. Kaleem had arranged to meet with his former high school classmate, Jose Varela, at Varela's residence for a marijuana transaction. During this encounter, Kaleem was fatally shot by Eric Aguilar, another individual present at the scene. Aguilar claimed that Kaleem had drawn a weapon on them, leading to the fatal discharge.
Following the murder, Varela and Aguilar transported Kaleem's body to Grimes County, where it was subjected to burning. Varela then drove Kaleem's car to Mexico and abandoned it there. Kaleem's family endured a year of uncertainty and hope before his remains were discovered in a shallow grave on a property in Grimes County.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office, with the help of Kaleem's brothers who used their expertise as software engineers to identify Varela as the last person to have had contact with the victim, connected Varela to the case. Varela was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder. Aguilar received a life sentence without parole, and the trial for a third suspect, Austin Walker, is pending. Another individual residing on the property where the remains were found admitted to burying the body and was charged with tampering.
In memory of Kaleem, his family and friends initiated a fundraiser to construct a water filtration plant in Pakistan, enabling him to continue contributing to the betterment of those in need. The fundraising effort reflects the lasting impact of Kaleem's positive influence on those who knew him.
