On the night of December 21, 2013, in the North Riverfront neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, a violent act of road-based aggression claimed the life of a local man. Cory Johnson, a 39-year-old male, was navigating the streets of St. Louis late that Saturday evening, traveling northbound on North Broadway. As he approached the intersection with Switzer Avenue, near the perimeter of the Calvary Cemetery, his journey was abruptly and fatally interrupted by the occupants of another vehicle.
According to investigators and reports from the scene, Johnson was behind the wheel of a white Dodge pickup truck when a dark gray, newer-model Chrysler 200 pulled alongside him. The vehicle, noted for having tinted windows and unknown license plates, contained unidentified suspects who opened fire on Johnson's truck. The sudden volley of gunfire struck Johnson in the chest and head, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. The pickup truck careened off the roadway, striking a light pole before finally coming to rest against the steps of a vacant building nearby.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, which occurred around 11:45 p.m., but Johnson had already succumbed to his injuries. He was found slumped over the steering wheel and was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the attack, the suspects in the dark gray sedan reportedly executed a U-turn on North Broadway and fled the area, heading southbound away from the crime scene.
Despite the specific description of the suspect vehicle, no arrests were immediately reported in the wake of the shooting. The case was subsequently listed by St. Louis Regional CrimeStoppers as an open homicide, with authorities seeking information regarding the occupants of the Chrysler 200.
