Oday Qadous, a 29-year-old Palestinian man, was tragically killed on October 7, 2019, in Houston, Texas. Qadous, who had recently immigrated to the United States in search of a better life, was working as a store clerk at a Valero gas station on Reed Road. On that fateful day, three masked men entered the gas station around 2:45 a.m. and opened fire on Qadous within minutes of their arrival.
The suspects, who were wearing Halloween masks, including one that resembled an alien, fled the scene in a dark-colored Nissan without stealing anything. Qadous was found dead inside the convenience store by responding officers.
The investigation into Qadous' death revealed that he had attempted to defend himself during the robbery. He was armed with a gun, but one of the suspects, later identified as 28-year-old Melvin Douglas, pulled out a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and shot Qadous three times. Shell casings were collected from the scene, and surveillance footage captured the suspects' actions. A tip from a store patron in Fifth Ward led to the identification and subsequent arrest of Douglas about a month later.
Douglas pleaded guilty to the murder of Oday Qadous and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. The Harris County District Attorney's Office stated that Douglas' guilty plea meant he could not appeal the conviction or punishment and would have to serve at least half of his sentence before being eligible for parole. The other two suspects involved in the robbery have not been identified. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Karen Barney and Michael Abner, who emphasized the premeditated and intentional nature of the crime. They expressed relief that Douglas would spend most, if not all, of his life behind bars, bringing some measure of justice to Qadous' family and friends.
