James Johnson, a 15-year-old male from Buna, Texas, tragically died on December 25, 2019, from an accidental shooting. The incident occurred at a home in a trailer park on the north side of Buna, where James was visiting his family for Christmas. According to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office, the shooting was accidental and involved James' 10-year-old cousin. The gun, which was believed to be unloaded, was handed to the cousin by a 19-year-old who had brought it to the home.
Unfortunately, when the 10-year-old boy handled the firearm, it discharged, striking James in the abdomen and chest.
James was immediately rushed to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The 19-year-old who brought the gun to the home was taken into custody for questioning and later released. Investigators determined that the firearm had been stolen, and the 19-year-old believed it was unloaded. The incident was ruled an accident, and no charges were filed against the individuals involved.
The community was deeply affected by James' death, and his church, Buna First Assembly of God, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical and funeral expenses. James was remembered as a respectful, fun-loving, and faithful young man who was well-liked by his peers and teachers at Buna High School.
This tragic accident highlighted the importance of gun safety and the devastating consequences that can result from mishandling firearms, even when no malicious intent is present. The Johnson family and the entire community continue to mourn the loss of James and remember him fondly.
