Ruben Salazar, a 44-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on November 22, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred in a Southeast Side neighborhood near I-37 and S. New Braunfels Ave. Salazar was at home when an argument broke out between his daughter and several unknown females. The altercation escalated, and the females left the scene, threatening to return and "shoot up" the home.
Salazar, anticipating further trouble, armed himself and waited in his car outside his residence. Shortly after, two vehicles parked about a block away, and multiple individuals exited the vehicles and began to open fire. During the exchange, Salazar was shot and later succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, police believed that one of the suspects from the vehicles had killed Salazar. However, further investigation revealed that the main suspect was inside the home at the time of the shooting. Security camera footage from a nearby home showed that Salazar was shot from within his own residence, not by the individuals in the street. The footage also captured 20-year-old Rudy Aragon, who was inside the home during the incident, walking out with a Glock handgun after Salazar was shot. Aragon was subsequently arrested and faced a manslaughter charge for his involvement in the death of Ruben Salazar.
The investigation into Salazar's death also involved the search for five additional suspects who were seen fleeing the scene in two vehicles immediately after the shooting. The police reviewed surveillance footage from neighboring homes to identify and capture these individuals.
