In the warm summer evening of August 13, 2015, in St. Louis, Missouri, the life of a young, ambitious Black woman named Whitney Brown was tragically cut short at the age of 24. She was a mother to a five-year-old son and was pursuing a career in nursing, working two jobs to support her family. Described by her mother as a "ray of sun," Whitney was a genuine and lovable person who was dedicated to her family and her future.
On that fateful night, Whitney was outside with a group of people in the 6000 block of Shulte Avenue when a vehicle, described as a gold or tan Chevy Silverado, drove by. Gunfire erupted from the truck, striking Whitney and a man named Devon Fletcher. Both sustained fatal injuries in the drive-by shooting. Tragically, Whitney's young son was in her car nearby at the time of the shooting.
In the years following the devastating loss of her daughter, Whitney's mother, Erica Jones, has become a vocal advocate for justice for her daughter and other victims of gun violence. She founded the organization "Voice of the Voiceless STL" to provide support for families who have experienced similar tragedies. Despite the passage of time, her grief remains palpable as she continues to seek answers and closure for her daughter's untimely death.
