Abraham Mata Campos, a 17-year-old Hispanic male from Highlands, Texas, tragically lost his life on April 5, 2021. Abraham was known for his jovial personality and love for outdoor activities, especially fishing. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend who brought joy to those around him.
On the night of his death, Abraham was at a trailer house with two friends, 17-year-old Leroy Lopez and 17-year-old Christopher Paz.
All three were reportedly highly intoxicated when an argument escalated into a violent altercation. Witnesses reported that Lopez picked up Abraham and slammed him to the ground, rendering him unconscious. The suspects then dragged Abraham out of the trailer house and shot him twice. They subsequently took his body to a wooded area behind a church in Highlands, where they stabbed him multiple times.
The next day, Lopez and Paz were detained by police after acting suspiciously in the vicinity. Paz led the authorities to Abraham's body and confessed to their involvement in the crime. Both Lopez and Paz were charged with murder and tampering with evidence. They each pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 25 years in prison for their roles in Abraham's death.
The case brought a sense of closure to Abraham's grieving family and community, who mourned the loss of a young life cut short by a brutal and senseless act. The sentences handed down to Lopez and Paz were seen as a measure of justice for Abraham and his loved ones.
