On April 6, 2021, Mateo Jovani Hernandéz, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was found fatally shot inside his vehicle in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. Dallas police responded to a welfare check at around 4:40 p.m. and discovered Hernandéz unresponsive in the driver's seat with a single gunshot wound to his upper chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Hernandéz's death is being treated as a murder.
At the time, there were no suspects identified, and police urged anyone with information to come forward. Detective John Valdez, who is handling the case, mentioned that robbery might be the motive, as Hernandéz's family reported that he had a backpack and $600 cash on him when he left home, which were missing when he was found.
Despite extensive efforts, including a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment, the case remains unsolved. Police released a video showing Hernandéz's black SUV parking on April 4, 2021, and believe the shooting occurred shortly after. They also have a blurry image of a potential suspect, described as having flashy white sneakers with black accents.
