Jonathan Jacob Romero, a 19-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically passed away on August 7, 2021, in San Juan, Texas. Romero was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the San Juan Shop Plaza, located at 713 W. Interstate 2. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The incident occurred during an attempted sale of an iPhone.
According to the investigation, Romero met with two individuals, Anthony Joseph Ferrer and Cesar Alexandro Torres Parra, in a white Chevrolet Malibu to sell the iPhone. Surveillance footage showed Romero arriving at the location between 3:00 and 3:15 p.m. and meeting with the occupants of the Malibu. Shortly after, a male subject wearing a dark shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes was seen running away from the vehicles, and gunshots were heard.
Ferrer and Torres were later charged with murder and engaging in organized criminal activity. Both men confessed to being inside the Malibu and claimed that Romero pulled a gun on them, leading to a struggle during which Romero was shot. The investigation revealed that the Malibu belonged to Ferrer, and Torres was his roommate at the time.
In addition to Ferrer and Torres, Alberto Magana Karr and Alberto Garcia Karr were also indicted on charges related to the incident. Magana Karr was charged with tampering with physical evidence, while Garcia Karr faced the same charge. Both men were accused of knowing about the murder and attempting to conceal evidence.
The case against Ferrer and Torres was later dismissed after it was determined that they acted in self-defense during the incident. However, Torres was rearrested on unrelated charges of indecent sexual contact with a child.
