Israel Martinez, a 22-year-old man from Waco, Texas, tragically died on September 19, 2021, from a gunshot wound in South Waco. His death was the result of a shooting incident that occurred in the 2200 block of Gurley Avenue. On November 18, 2021, 19-year-old Justin Angel Hernandez was arrested on an unrelated charge, but investigators were able to obtain an additional arrest warrant for Martinez's murder. Following this, on November 22, 2021, the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension and Special Tasks team arrested two juveniles, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, in connection to the shooting. Additionally, a 14-year-old juvenile was arrested, making it the fourth arrest linked to the incident.
The investigation continued, and on February 17, 2022, the McLennan County Grand Jury indicted Justin Angel Hernandez on capital murder charges for the death of Israel Martinez. The indictment stemmed from an incident in March 2021, where Hernandez allegedly fired shots at multiple cars in a Waco neighborhood, resulting in Martinez's death.
