Carlos Mena Pineda, a 45-year-old Hispanic man, tragically lost his life on September 23, 2021, in Houston, Texas. He was fatally shot by Santos Melendez-Granados, the ex-boyfriend of Mena's girlfriend, in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 13100 block of Stonefield Drive. Mena was with his girlfriend when Melendez-Granados approached them and opened fire with a shotgun, hitting Mena multiple times.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Mena was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, Melendez-Granados fled the scene but was later arrested on September 26, 2021. He was charged with murder and taken into custody by the Harris County Sheriff's Office. During the investigation, it was revealed that Melendez-Granados had been tracking his ex-girlfriend using a GPS device and had planned the attack. He was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in February 2024.
The case drew significant attention due to the premeditated nature of the crime and the emotional testimony from Mena's girlfriend, who recounted the events of that fateful night. The Harris County District Attorney's office described Melendez-Granados as a "jealous ex-boyfriend" who couldn't bear to see his ex-girlfriend with another man.
