On November 12, 2021, 22-year-old Isiah Thompson was fatally shot in a strip mall parking lot in Far East Dallas. Responding officers found Thompson lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds; he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Thompson told a witness that "Geo" shot him just before he died.
The witness also informed investigators that Thompson attempted to flee after an encounter with two men in a pickup truck, one of whom allegedly followed and shot him. The witness provided a partial license plate number, which matched a vehicle driven by one of the suspects.
Dallas police arrested 17-year-old Luis Angel Martinez and 19-year-old Geovani Arreguin on murder charges in connection with Thompson's death. Both suspects were taken into custody after seeking medical attention for gunshot wounds at a local hospital. Martinez spoke with detectives, stating that he and Arreguin had gone to the parking lot to sell a gun to Thompson. Upon arrival, Martinez claimed he handed the gun to Thompson, who then allegedly turned it on Arreguin, demanding money. Martinez recounted that Arreguin told Thompson he could keep the gun since he didn't have any money, but Thompson refused to leave. A struggle ensued, during which Thompson allegedly shot Arreguin in the arm and leg. Martinez stated that he then grabbed a gun from Arreguin and shot Thompson as he tried to run away, continuing to fire until his gun was empty. After the shooting, Martinez and Arreguin reportedly disposed of Thompson's phone and the handgun by throwing them out of their vehicle's window.
Both suspects were held at the Dallas County Jail, with bail set at $300,000 for Arreguin and $200,000 for Martinez. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thompson's death and the events leading up to it remained ongoing.
