Jonathan Ray Espinoza, a 39-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 4, 2022, in Tulia, Texas. The incident occurred early in the morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. when officers from the Tulia Police Department were dispatched to the 800 block of North El Paso following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Espinoza inside a residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers immediately administered first aid until emergency medical services arrived. He was initially transported to Swisher Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
During the investigation, law enforcement officials identified 37-year-old Fabian Saldana III as the suspected shooter. A firearm believed to have been used in the attack was located near the crime scene. The Tulia Police Department enlisted the assistance of the Texas Rangers to lead the investigation. Through coordinated efforts involving the Texas Rangers, the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division, and the Tulia Police Department, Saldana was apprehended the following day in Amarillo, Texas, by Texas Department of Public Safety officers. He was subsequently booked into the Randall County Jail, where he was held without bond.
The shooting prompted Tulia Elementary School, located nearby, to initiate temporary lockdown procedures as a precautionary measure. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack, and further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. The Tulia Police Department extended condolences to Espinoza’s family following the tragic incident.
