On the morning of April 4, 2016, a violent incident unfolded in the West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of 32-year-old Kawynn LaMorn Humphries. Around 4:00 a.m., local law enforcement officers were dispatched to the 5900 block of Cates Avenue, located near the city’s western border, following reports of gunfire in the area. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered the Black male victim lying in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a tragic end to the life of a man known for his deep love for his family and his free spirit.
Detectives from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation, canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and searching for physical evidence. Despite the severity of the attack and the presence of officers in the early morning hours, no immediate suspects were identified. Initial reports from the department indicated that they had no leads on a potential motive or the identity of the shooter. The case quickly grew cold, with no announcements of arrests or charges filed in the years following the murder, leaving the crime unsolved.
The Humphries family faced further devastation two years later involving the victim's son, Ka'Wynn Humphries Jr., often referred to as 'Lil K-Bo.' In August 2018, the 18-year-old was waiting at a bus stop in Ferguson, Missouri, when he was approached by armed robbers. During the confrontation, the assailants shot the teenager before fleeing with his wallet, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. As with his father's case, the gunmen responsible for the paralysis of the younger Humphries managed to evade capture. The family's tragedy deepened when Ka'Wynn Jr. passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 24.
