Nicholas Croom, a 26-year-old African American male from Humble, Texas, tragically lost his life on January 20, 2022, in what authorities described as a road rage incident. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Croom was on his way home from work to see his brother when he was shot and killed. The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. on the 8700 block of Sam Houston Parkway East.
Witnesses reported that Croom and the driver of a tan or brown pickup truck were involved in a road rage altercation while heading east on Sam Houston Parkway. Moments before the shooting, the two vehicles were seen driving aggressively and cutting each other off. Croom was found dead inside his gray 2011 Toyota Camry, which had crashed along the service road of Beltway 8 near Wilson Road. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the suspected shooter, identified as 35-year-old Simon Adams, had fled the scene in his truck. Adams was later arrested without incident and booked into the Harris County Jail. He was charged with murder in connection with the death of Nicholas Croom. The preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting stemmed from the road rage incident between the two drivers. Adams has a criminal history dating back to 2007, including charges of assault causing bodily injury to a family member, interference with duties of a public servant, and failure to stop and give information.
Croom's family, devastated by the loss, described him as an empathetic, calm-mannered, bright, and kind soul. His mother, Monica Eagle, and father, Mark Croom, expressed their grief and anger, calling for justice for their son. They set up an online fundraiser to help with funeral expenses and urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers. The family continues to seek answers and justice for Nicholas Croom, who would have turned 27 just two weeks after his untimely death.
