Dajuan Lester Townes, a 19-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on February 7, 2022, in Brackettville, Texas. Townes, a soldier in the Texas Army National Guard, was involved in an accidental shooting incident while supporting "Operation Lone Star," a border protection program initiated by Governor Greg Abbott. The incident occurred at Fort Clark Springs, where Townes was sitting in a car and handed his personal gun to another soldier in the backseat.
Unfortunately, the gun discharged, resulting in Townes' fatal injury. He was transported to a hospital in San Antonio, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Townes was an Army horizontal construction engineer assigned to the 272nd Engineer Company, 386th Engineer Battalion. He had joined the Texas Army National Guard in October 2019 and was a graduate of Grand Oaks High School in Conroe ISD. Townes was remembered by his school principal as a respectful and hardworking individual who had overcome many challenges in his life. He had aspirations of a bright future and believed that enlisting in the military would provide him with opportunities.
The Texas Military Department and the Texas Rangers launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding Townes' death. The investigation aimed to ensure that such a tragic loss of life would not occur again. Governor Greg Abbott expressed his condolences and emphasized the importance of the Texas National Guard in maintaining community safety.
