Family members of a man gunned down on the front porch of his Smithfield home Wednesday night said he died protecting his mother.
Latrelle Hines, 23, and his mother, Annie Hines, were outside about 10 p.m. when two men walked up and opened fire, Annie Hines said.
She said she was standing up, and her son sitting down, when the gunfire started.
