The circumstances surrounding Coewin's death led to a legal case against Blake Michael Downs, who
was charged with his murder. The incident occurred in a garage at Downs' family home, where a 9mm pistol was fired twice, with one shot hitting Coewin in the head. The case went to trial, and in August 2024, Downs was found guilty of murder. The jury sentenced him to 30 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison system.
Following the trial, Downs' attorney filed a motion for a new trial, citing newly discovered evidence that was not available during the initial trial. However, the motion was denied by the 135th District Court Judge Stephen Williams on October 18, 2024. The new evidence included a video containing audio of the shots fired, which Downs' attorney claimed contradicted the testimony of the state's expert witness.
The case highlighted issues with the handling of evidence by the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, as they reportedly had knowledge of the video but failed to provide it to the District Attorney's Office.
