The sellers, upon discovering the counterfeit money, decided to rob the buyers, leading to a high-speed chase and gunfire. During the chaos, Kathryn, who was an innocent bystander, was fatally shot.
Following the incident, six men were arrested in connection with Kathryn's death. The suspects included Gustavo Hernandez, 28, and Francisco Adrian Mejia, 24, from Mission, Texas, and David Allen Devaney Sr., 58, David Allen Devaney Jr., 35, Clint Daniels Dunlap, 40, and David Matthew Dever, 36, from North Texas. They face charges ranging from capital murder to drug-related offenses.
The investigation involved extensive witness interviews and the collection of evidence from multiple crime scenes. Surveillance video and witness accounts helped identify the suspects and their vehicles. The suspects were taken into custody over the weekend, and their bonds were set at $450,000 each.
Kathryn was a mechanical engineer at Sachem Inc. in Cleburne and was described by her husband as a humble and loving person. She is survived by her husband, two sons, two grandchildren, and another grandchild on the way.
