On December 22, 1908, in Barboursville, Tennessee, Deputy Robert B. Smith, a 32-year-old white male, was fatally shot while attempting to serve a warrant on three men accused of robbing a miner. Deputy Smith had enlisted the assistance of four men, including Deputy John Brooks, to aid in the arrests. As Deputy Smith read the warrant to the suspects, one of them opened fire, resulting in his death.
