Deputy Sheriff Robert B. Smith was a 32-year-old male lawman serving with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky when the events that would end his life unfolded in the final days before Christmas 1908. In the rough country around the Kentucky–Tennessee border, a miner had been robbed, and three men were being sought on that charge.
