On a tragic Wednesday morning, November 15, 1995, the halls of Richland High School in Lynnville, Tennessee, became the scene of a devastating school shooting. Fourteen-year-old Diane Marie Collins, a freshman at the school, tragically lost her life during the violent rampage carried out by a fellow student. The assailant was identified as seventeen-year-old James Ellison 'Jamie' Rouse, a senior at the same school.
The incident began when Rouse, armed with a. 22-caliber Remington Viper semi-automatic rifle, entered the school through a north entrance. In a hallway crowded with over fifty students, he first targeted two teachers, Carolyn Yancey and Carolyn Foster, shooting them both in the head. Ms. Foster succumbed to her injuries, while Ms. Yancey was critically wounded but survived. Rouse then aimed his rifle at football coach Ron Shirey. The shot missed its intended target, but the bullet fatally struck Diane Collins in the throat. The chaotic scene came to an end when a male student and an agriculture teacher bravely tackled Rouse, disarming him.
In the aftermath, law enforcement quickly took Rouse into custody. The investigation revealed that the motive for the attack was reportedly revenge for poor grades. It also came to light that Rouse had an accomplice, his friend Stephen Abbott, who had driven him to the school knowing of Rouse's violent intentions.
Jamie Rouse was tried as an adult and ultimately convicted on one count of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree murder, and one count of attempted first-degree murder. He received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 42 years. His accomplice, Stephen Abbott, was convicted of criminal responsibility for second-degree murder and criminal responsibility for attempted first and second-degree murder. He was initially sentenced to 40 years in prison, which was later reduced to 27 years. Abbott was released from prison on January 26, 2014. Jamie Rouse remains incarcerated at the Turney Center Industrial Complex.
