In the quiet town of Smyrna, Tennessee, a young woman's life was tragically cut short in a violent act that stemmed from a domestic dispute. Kayleigh Dupont, a 28-year-old female, was found deceased in her Village Lake Drive apartment on the evening of Thursday, January 16, 2014. Authorities discovered her in an upstairs bathroom, the victim of a fatal shooting.
The events that led to her death began to unfold with a hang-up 911 call that evening, prompting police to be dispatched to the
residence. Upon their arrival, they made a grim discovery. Inside, they found not only Ms. Dupont but also 32-year-old Justin Bennett, who was also deceased. The investigation quickly determined that the incident was a murder-suicide.
Investigators concluded that Bennett had forcibly entered the apartment by kicking in the front door. He then confronted Dupont in the bathroom, where he shot her before turning the weapon on himself. The tragic event was preceded by a domestic violence call that Smyrna Police had responded to just two days prior. A dispute over a broken toy train belonging to Dupont's young son had escalated, leading to her seeking a restraining order against Bennett's father, who was arrested for domestic assault. It is believed that Justin Bennett became consumed by this situation, which ultimately led to the fatal confrontation.
At the time of the incident, one of the three children living in the apartment, a toddler of approximately two to three years of age, was found unharmed inside the home. The child was secured by officers and later transferred to state custody. As the investigation concluded that Bennett was the sole perpetrator and was deceased at the scene, no arrests were made, and there were no other suspects in the case.
